Sebelumnya, kita gak boleh dong nglupain yang namanya sejarah! Makanya yuk kita baca-baca dikit tentang sejarahnya sepeda itu kayak gimana sih? Pasti temen-temen banyak yang belum tau kan…



Seperti ditulis Ensiklopedia Columbia, nenek moyang sepeda diperkirakan berasal dari Prancis. Menurut kabar sejarah, negeri itu sudah sejak awal abad ke-18 mengenal alat transportasi roda dua yang dinamai velocipede. Bertahun-tahun, velocipede menjadi satu-satunya istilah yang merujuk hasil rancang bangun kendaraan dua roda.

Yang pasti, konstruksinya belum mengenal besi. Modelnya pun masih sangat "primitif". Ada yang bilang tanpa engkol, pedal tongkat kemudi (setang). Ada juga yang bilang sudah mengenal engkol dan setang, tapi konstruksinya dari kayu.

Adalah seorang Jerman bernama Baron Karls Drais von Sauerbronn yang pantas dicatat sebagai salah seorang penyempurna velocipede. Tahun 1818, von Sauerbronn membuat alat transportasi roda dua untuk menunjang efisiensi kerjanya. Sebagai kepala pengawas hutan Baden, ia memang butuh sarana transportasi bermobilitas tinggi. Tapi, model yang dikembangkan tampaknya masih mendua, antara sepeda dan kereta kuda. Sehingga masyarakat menjuluki ciptaan sang Baron sebagai dandy horse.

Baru pada 1839, Kirkpatrick MacMillan, pandai besi kelahiran Skotlandia, membuatkan "mesin" khusus untuk sepeda. Tentu bukan mesin seperti yang dimiliki sepeda motor, tapi lebih mirip pendorong yang diaktifkan engkol, lewat gerakan turun-naik kaki mengayuh pedal. MacMillan pun sudah "berani" menghubungkan engkol tadi dengan tongkat kemudi (setang sederhana).

Sedangkan ensiklopedia Britannica.com mencatat upaya penyempurnaan penemu Prancis, Ernest Michaux pada 1855, dengan membuat pemberat engkol, hingga laju sepeda lebih stabil. Makin sempurna setelah orang Prancis lainnya, Pierre Lallement (1865) memperkuat roda dengan menambahkan lingkaran besi di sekelilingnya (sekarang dikenal sebagai pelek atau velg). Lallement juga yang memperkenalkan sepeda dengan roda depan lebih besar daripada roda belakang.

Namun kemajuan paling signifikan terjadi saat teknologi pembuatan baja berlubang ditemukan, menyusul kian bagusnya teknik penyambungan besi, serta penemuan karet sebagai bahan baku ban. Namun, faktor safety dan kenyamanan tetap belum terpecahkan. Karena teknologi suspensi (per dan sebagainya) belum ditemukan, goyangan dan guncangan sering membuat penunggangnya sakit pinggang. Setengah bercanda, masyarakat menjuluki sepeda Lallement sebagai boneshaker (penggoyang tulang).

Sehingga tidak heran jika di era 1880-an, sepeda tiga roda yang dianggap lebih aman buat wanita dan laki-laki yang kakinya terlalu pendek untuk mengayuh sepeda konvensional menjadi begitu populer. Trend sepeda roda dua kembali mendunia setelah berdirinya pabrik sepeda pertama di Coventry, Inggris pada 1885. Pabrik yang didirikan James Starley ini makin menemukan momentum setelah tahun 1888 John Dunlop menemukan teknologi ban angin. Laju sepeda pun tak lagi berguncang.

Penemuan lainnya, seperti rem, perbandingan gigi yang bisa diganti-ganti, rantai, setang yang bisa digerakkan, dan masih banyak lagi makin menambah daya tarik sepeda. Sejak itu, berjuta-juta orang mulai menjadikan sepeda sebagai alat transportasi, dengan Amerika dan Eropa sebagai pionirnya. Meski lambat laun, perannya mulai disingkirkan mobil dan sepeda motor, sepeda tetap punya pemerhati. Bahkan penggemarnya dikenal sangat fanatik.

About Allen Bike Racks
In 1967, after a few years of working on the aerospace technology for the Apollo missions, Dick Allen was out of a job. Government cutbacks led Allen, a Harvard-trained physicist, to transform his garage hobby into a new industry. A cycling enthusiast, inventor, and family man, Allen had a personal need for a bike-carrying device. On weekends, he would take his sons and wife to Cape Cod or the White Mountains of New Hampshire. What proved difficult time and again was the transport of his family’s bicycles. Rather than fight through inconvenience with twine and a dinged car, Allen sought an answer for himself as well as a market in which he foresaw major growth possibilities.

Always a pathfinder, Allen took to work in his Lincoln, Massachusetts garage in search of a more efficient way to transport bikes. Drafting designs during the day and constructing them throughout the night, he put together a model made of electrical conduit, metal strapping, and fire hose casings (for padding). At first, the Allens’ tested the prototype on weekend excursions. Finding the first trunk-mounted rack to be a success, Dick started Allen Bike Racks. Dealer acceptance came quickly, and by 1971 Allen Bike Racks were sold nationally through a number of major bicycle distributors. Today, the company owns over three dozen patents and offers a versatile product line of bike racks while Dick’s son Alex now owns and operates the business. I bought this bike for my 4 1/2 yr old son for this coming easter. He hasn't seen it yet ( the easter bunny will be delivering it) but I already know he will love it. the assembly was relatively easy, and didn't require all the tools the instructions/box indicated. My only dislike thusfar is the fact that nowhere in the listing/specs/details online was it listed that this bike contains lead. It wasn't until fedex delivered it that I saw a big warning on the package "WARNING: CONTAINS LEAD" I find it a bit disconcerting that this was not mentioned anywhere and no one had brought it up in previous reviews. We live in an old house and my son has already had elevated lead levels so it is a concern for me, I figure other parents would like to know about this as well.

ASU Urban Art Festival / Last Fridays!

Just found a few fotos from the previous ASU Urban Art Festival (March 26) at ASU West. Wheels in Motion is a non-profit organization that is making moves to help the kids out there and are such a rad group of people!



Last Fridays are growing, this past event had 10 flatlanders and about 10 ramp and street guys all sessioning together all day. They have bands performing along with some of the most amazing tag and paint artists! Ray is even planning on building a 24X24' wooden stage for the flatland! Anyone interested in coming hit me up, will be a party!

Tony Hoffman interview.

Back when I was 16-18 I raced a kid named Tony Hoffman coming up the amateur ranks. Tony comes from a great supportive family, and at that time he had good sponsor support from companies like Fox Racing and Spy Optic. Tony was at the top of his age class in 19-27 expert when his life took a turn for the worst. Tony went from the top of the podium,  to running with the wrong crowd, being strung out on drugs, to being homeless, to spending 23 and a half months in prison for armed robbery. Now at age 26, Tony has been out of prison for 16 months, is back on his bike with Olympic aspirations. I'm a firm believer that everyone deserves a second chance and Tony is definitely making the most out of his. A Bmx website did an interview with him and it's such a success story, read it here.

We bought this bike for our daughter's 4th birthday next month. I wanted two things out of a bike:

1. No corporate marketing of Disney Princesses, Dora-the-(dead-eyed)-Explorer, or Barbie. *shudder* This is more difficult to find than you might think.

2. A bike that was high enough quality as to encourage riding, and make it a pleasure, rather than rendering it a tedious task soon to be given up.

I think this bike fits the bill on both counts, though as my child has yet to ride it, I don't know much about how well it functions. I will update post-gifting with my impressions that way.

Here are my initial impressions of the pros and cons:

Pros:

- This bike is gorgeous. The style is very retro circa 1950's, with the full, generous, shock-absorbing seat, the 50's aqua (it's definitely more aqua than the baby blue it appears to be in the photo) and salmon-pink accents on the wheels and flowers. The other accent colors are black, white - and in the center flourish there is a champagne-tan color as a backdrop to the pink and white flowers. All the designs on the bike have a glittery appearance that sort of shines in the light. The seat, too is embellished with a scant floral design in pink and white, as are the fenders - these things I found difficult to discern in the photos.

- I love that the tires are primarily black, so that when they make contact with the dirty ground they won't instantly be rendered used and filthy looking.

- The bike, from all appearances looks as if it would be very comfortable and easy to ride.

Cons:

- There really are no instructions. Zero. There's a really bad photo of the training wheel assembly that you won't be able to glean any information from, and a 'users manual' with lots of tips about not riding at night, and how dangerous that is, and always wearing a helmet, and even a thorough layout of a brake system that this bike doesn't have, but there's not a single detail about how you're supposed to assemble this thing.

I've never assembled a bike before, so I found this especially daunting, and it took me an hour and a half... which isn't terrible, all things considered.

Thankfully, the bike does come partially assembled. It is the buyers job to assemble the training wheels, which after a few mishaps I discovered needed to lock into an existing piece on the rear wheel. The front fender (that's what that strange u-shaped metal bar is for) and wheel, seat, handlebars (which also must be adjusted to the correct angle), pedals, and a couple reflectors that you have to guess on the intended location of. There are tools that come with the bike - 4 Allen wrenches and a double-sided wrench that fits the majority of the bolts, but I still needed a Phillips head and ratchet for miscellaneous other bolts and to occasionally hold something in place while tightening the other side.

I think I managed to get it put together correctly. It seems study, but I would have loved some validation on this point, as I am a complete novice at assembling bikes.

- The bike, as other reviewers mentioned, arrived with a few minor scratches. Seems to me, had it been protected a little better in shipping, this wouldn't have happened.

-The flower stickers were not applied as well as I would have hoped. There are a few areas where there were small bubbles under the stickers around the edges, and they couldn't be smoothed. I think this will effect the longevity of the appearance of the stickers, as dirt will get under them and cause them to peal.

- I wish the bike wasn't made in China. Not a totally unexpected detail, but I personally prefer things to be made anywhere but China.

One more tidbit of note is that the colors of the bike are unusual and would be difficult to match, and that's worth considering if you're ordering accessories. If you order baby blue or something in the standard pink range, it'll probably clash.

I knew I wanted a Giro helmet, and so we bought the Lucille the Bike Giro Rodeo helmet alongside it, and thankfully, the range of color in that helmet allowed for it to match - perfectly - though the styles are a little different, but there aren't really any helmets with a 50's look anyway. A plain black or white helmet would look nice alongside it too.

We bought white streamers and I'd recommend that anyone else buying streamers do the same. The bike has just enough white that the white streamers look like they 'belong'. Our other accessories are chrome and black, and look like they were made for this bike. I'm so glad I decided to stay way from the pink and blue spectrum!

I know, probably overkill in the information department, but when you're spending this much money, it makes sense to have a better idea of what you'll be getting.

All in all, I'm pretty pleased with this bike. If you want something different, there really aren't any other options, especially in this price range - I spent a lot of time researching.

I can't wait to see my daughter's reaction come her birthday. I think she'll love it. I mean, who wouldn't? This really is a hip little ride for youngsters :)

Got exactly as described. Arrived a little slow, but all in all I am pleased. This was easy to put together and seems to be durable. My daughter is three and she went nuts when she saw the bike. Here feet do reach the pedals just fine, however she has not gotten the concept of pedaling all together right. She just kinda sits on it and pushes it with her feet. She loves the back pack on the front, and I personally like the colors on this bike. I am sure next summer she will get much more use out of this bike.....Jan.20 2010 Well, it is now a year later or so. The bike did not hold up all that well. The streamers came out of the handles in the first couple months and the plastic "step' part that goes across the back has broken. The bike is still being used but did not stand the test of time very well.

About Allen Bike Racks
In 1967, after a few years of working on the aerospace technology for the Apollo missions, Dick Allen was out of a job. Government cutbacks led Allen, a Harvard-trained physicist, to transform his garage hobby into a new industry. After researching jogging strollers, reading hundreds of reviews and several books and consumer guides, I took the leap of faith to spend 0+ on this jogging stroller. And I must say, it was money well spent. This truly is the ultimate jogging stroller, with great space and secure harness for the baby while also delivering on the suspension side. Possibly my favorite user-friendly feature is how well the brakes work...when I first started working out after having the baby, running was too hard so I bought rollerblades (brave, I know). Those brakes saved my bacon more than once, I loved them. Furthermore, once I completely ate it (crashed) but thankfully I had the wrist strap attached. I was banged up, but of course the only thing I could think of is crazy woman, is your baby okay--and she was. The jogger stopped because of the wrist tether attachment, flipped back, and my little darling was comfortable as could be looking up at the sky and clouds. Thanks to a great stroller, only one of us got banged up! Additionally, it's clear to me that this stroller is so well built that it will last many, many years, and handle many, many trails. The other jogging strollers' main drawbacks were a multitude of complaints that they were shoddily built, which is clearly not the case here.

There is one area this jogging stroller could ABSOLUTELY improve, considering we've been able to put a man on the moon. My #1 complaint is how BIG it is, and it does NOT fold down...the BOB research team needs to step it up and figure out a way to fold this stroller up compactly to fit into smaller spaces. We live in a condo, and wow this thing takes up a lot of room. I can't live without it, but what a pain to store. If they could solve this problem, not only could it fit into an actual car (we have a Ford Excursion, so that's cheating--no way this would fit into a car trunk) but it could also fit into a closet for storage. That improvement would truly make this the ultimate jogging stroller.

Quamen Cyphr 2.0 Prototype!

Check it, this is the first prototype of the 2.0 Cyphr. Thanks to MAX for busting this out in pretty much 1 day. I just assembled it and now I have to drive to Jomopro so I cant even ride it yet!!! :(

Enarson in the Caymans

Haro's Dirt, Street and Park weapon Dennis Enarson just emailed me the latest...

"Just got home from the Cayman Islands. It was seriously amazing! I went out there for a Fuel TV "Built to shred" episode, with Gary Young, Aarron Ross, and some sick skaters. We went scuba diving, swam with sting rays, went to beach partys, and rode amazing spots. They built us ramps on abandoned three story building and even on a pirate ship. We also got to ride the black pearl skate park, and in my opinion its the best park ever! The episode should be pretty cool when it comes out, so keep checking for it on Fuel TV."

Moto shredders ride Haro BMX

Monster / Pro Circuit / Kawasaki's Josh Hansen is back to the basics riding a Haro Pro XL around the streets of San Clemente. Pictured here with a bum that he gave his jersey to, Josh is going to start riding BMX at the track for MX cross training. Jeremy "Twitch" Stenberg has also been riding a Haro PRO XL at Lake Perris BMX on Monday nights. These dudes know who makes the best BMX Race bikes! Ryan Nyquist is still a kid at heart. One our recent team trip to So Cal Ryan got bored and decided to climb a tree. This was a brave move for someone that's scared of spiders!

Vans Camp, Orlando Florida

I was stoked to get the opportunity to attend my 3rd year of the Vans Clinic put on at the Vans skate park in Orlando Florida on Friday.
30 kids aged from 8-15 attended and got to hang with the pro's.
We had a bunny-hop comp, long jump comp, and played foot-down.
Some kids learnt how to roll back from a quarter pipe, and a couple of kids pulled their first bar spins!
Haro Bikes and Premium Products sponsored the event and one lucky kid won a new Premium complete bike!

It was a great day and Ill post the video from the day once its live online...
