Video: Jared Chilko & Luke Santucci

Ok, so I wasn't sure where this video was from but someone told me it is from the Summer of Fit DVD in the bonus section. I haven't seen that DVD so I didn't recognize this clip but if anybody from Fit doesn't want me to post this please let me know.

That said, these guys throw down some good shit and I want to see The Summer of Fit so maybe I'll go buy it today because I heard it's $10 or something and I'm sure I can steal $10 from my girlfriend's purse without her noticing. And if she does notice I'll pretend to not know what she's talking about... then distract her with a comment about Angelina Jolie or some shit, because let's face it... my girlfriend's not the sharpest knife in the drawer.

Shredders include: Mike Aitken, Eddie Cleveland, Chase Hawk, Edwin Delarosa, Tom White, Justin Inman, Brian Foster, Chase Dehart, and a bunch of other riders that are better than you.

The Top 5 Reasons You cant do Tailwhips like Scotty Cranmer

Well this is my year end list. Except that it is a video list.

And i hope nobody thinks I'm trying to rip on Scotty Cranmer, cuz you would be wrong. Cranmer is an amazing rider in my book. I just chose him because he's the rider that comes to mind when I think of the sheer amount of tailwhips and variations he does.

Video: Corey Bohan Trick Tip - Tailwhip to Manual

Just found this Corey Bohan trick tip. Whether or not you already know how to do this it's always interesting to hear how someone explains a trick. Maybe you're over whip to manuals and you would rather work on your Cranmer-esque "frontflip tailwhip to tuck no-hander... or whatever you call that trick you do into the foam pit but this video is still worth watching. Some people really suck at explaining things but it seems like Corey does a decent job.

Watch this video if you want to learn this trick or if you just want to hear his Aussie accent.

Jimmy Levan Benefit at T-1

Jimmy Levan Jam at T1
It went down this last Saturday at T-1. What went down, you ask?

Some great riding, awesome music, uber art show, and a lot of beer swigging all in the name of Jimmy Levan. Unfortunately I had to leave early to go to my little sister's graduation dinner but I had a blast while I was there.

Chase Hawk knows the T-1 ramp pretty damn well and it showed. He was blasting 9-10 foot airs on the second wall after dropping in. Aaron Ross rode the ramp a bit too. Other notables that were there - Joe Rich and Taj (of course), Tony Cardona, Joe Simon, Neil Harrington, James Shepherd (Homeless Bikes), Adam Baker, Ryan Smith, Rob-O, Andy Martinez, Sandy Carson, Devon Hutchins, Adam Roye... um that's all I can remember.

I bought a bunch of art there and I will be giving some away in a contest that i'm going to have to come up with. Email me if you have any ideas about what I should do.

All in all it was a good time for a great cause. $2000 was raised in total!

Head over to the Terrible One site for a bunch of pics.
There are a couple of pics on the Fit site as well.

Riding Music: Pre-Release Nada Surf - Lucky

Nada Surf - Lucky
New York based Nada Surf will be releasing their next album Lucky on Feb. 5th, 2008.

"The record is filled with songs of restlessness, longing and the elusiveness of love. Yet, in its inimitable way, the band beautifully counterbalances its signature lyrical wistfulness with its singular musical buoyancy. Intimate tunes become we're-all-in-this-together anthems, thanks to the chiming guitars, propulsive beat, and the ever-present yearning in singer Matthew Caws’ voice." -- Rolling Stone

The album features guest appearances by Death Cab For Cutie's Ben Gibbard and the Long Winters' John Roderick, along with singer/songwriter Ed Harcourt and Jesse Sykes guitarist Phil Wandscher.

I have always been a huge Nada Surf fan and this album doesn't disappoint. My opinions are usually guided by how something makes me feel because I'm an artist by nature. This album will make you feel like pedaling off to watch a sunset and ponder life... that's a good thing. Load this up and get touchy feely while riding your stunt cycle.

Vibrations Urbaines '07 BMX Park
This year is the 10th anniversary of Vibrations Urbaines in Pessac, France. In 2006 more than 120 skate and BMX riders took part at the contest and more than 12.000 spectators visited the event. Vibrations Urbaines is known for its mixture of urban culture and irreproachable organization. The event typically has DJs, rapper, art, and competitions involving BMX, skateboarding and in-line skating.

If you read French you can visit the website here:

M.I.A. - Kala and ArularI have been wanting to do a music post with these 2 CDs but I couldn't think of anything to write because the music is so hard to describe. "
Weird, playful, unclassifiable, sexy, brilliantly addictive. " -- Rolling Stone

Video: Todd Meyn - Levi's Red Tab Award Winner

A few weeks ago Levi's started the Red Tab Contest to award prizes to rider submitted videos. Well 15 year old Todd Meyn won the Riding category with an insane video of himself pulling impossible tricks at will. Flip whips, flair 540 tire taps, footjam variations.., are you kidding me?!

I had never heard of him but apparently he has been competing a bit lately with some success. Somebody hook this kid up with some flow!

A quick search results in finding these:
6th place amateur - mini ramp contest
1st place Gravity Games - Over 16 division
5th place '07 Monster BMX games - Am Park

Todd is going to be a household name soon...

Video: Jake Brown's Road to Recovery

Jake Brown's Road to Recovery
We all remember what happened to Jake Brown on August 2nd at the X games, in fact, it's impossibly hard to forget. He fell over 4 stories to the flat bottom of a ramp... and survived. It was the car crash that you couldn't tear your eyes from. Mat Hoffman fell from that height and was in and out of a coma for 3 days.

Jake Brown walked away.

So it's almost half a year later and Jake is still recovering. I'm thinking that if he had any of his 9 lives left before this fall they're all gone now. Watch this video to see the events, how he survived, and how he's doing today.

Riding Music: Fugazi - 13 Songs

Fugazi - 13 SongsIan MacKaye... you have to respect this man. Influential frontman and founder of band like Minor Threat, Embrace, Fugazi, and most recently, The Evens. He has always followed his DIY aesthetics in an era where it was much harder to do. His bands created 'zines, recorded and distributed records, and booked shows and toured all before the internet and computer programs like Pro Tools were ever around. They kept their overhead low and worked hard which paid off for them not by selling millions of records but by being true to themselves, not being a slave to a record label, and ultimately doing what they love for a living.

Fugazi's sound in the early years was a departure from the hardcore sound of Minor Threat and had a lot of heavy Zeppelinesque riffs. Ian's and Guy's vocals were always very distinct and which added to their amazing sound. 13 songs is a compilation of Fugazi's first 2 EPs and still manages to capture their raw post-punk sound but adds a layer if refinement that works quite well while keeping the energy alive.

I'm not a music critic... just a fan. Give Fugazi a listen. The music is great even on first listen but the more you listen, the more they grow on you.

Don't wait until you parents go out and get you some whack shit from wherever the hell they shop. TELL THEM what you want. Or tell them where they can get you the stuff you want. It'll save everyone time and trouble.

Aaron Ross Bike Check overviewAaron Ross has had a great year no doubt about it. When the Empire video dropped everybody was talking about his part in it. Then the Etnies Grounded video came out... another monster. Follow that up with a NORA Cup #1 Street Rider of the Year award and a medal at the X-Games in Mexico and life is good for gorilla Ross. As the year comes to an end we caught up with Aaron to ask him a few questions and peep his new whip.

Q - You are going on the road for a month, tell us a little about that trip.
Aaron - I’m going on a filming trip for a few weeks for the new Odyssey video, Electronical. We’re heading out to New Jersey then from there to LA for a few days then I will be back in Austin.

Q - Can you tell us a little about your new FBM frame?
Aaron - It’s just cleaned up more from the last one, lighter, and gyro tabs you can take on and off and it looks sweet....

Q - Is there a new part that you're really stoked on?
Aaron - My new bars and grips are both sweet. The grips are super soft and the bars are big but still good for barspins.

Q - Can you tell us anything about the new Odyssey video - or is there anything you want to say about it?
Aaron - It’s going to be sweet and I can’t wait to see it all put together at the end. You need to check it out in a few months it’s definitely going to be good. I can’t wait.

What is RSS?

Do you want to keep up to date with the latest posts on BMXfactor?

We have a number of ways that you can subscribe to this site and receive updates. The main one that our readers use is our RSS feed.

What is RSS?
RSS is a technology that is being used by millions of web users around the world to keep track of their favorite websites.

In the ‘old days’ of the web to keep track of updates on a website you had to ‘bookmark’ websites in your browser and manually return to them on a regular basis to see what had been added.

The problems with bookmarking
  • You as the web surfer had to do all the work
  • It can get complicated when you are trying to track many websites at once
  • You miss information when you forget to check your bookmarksYou end up seeing the same information over and over again on sites that don’t update very often
Rss changes everything
What if you could tell a website to let you know every time that they update? In a sense, this is what RSS does for you.

RSS flips things around a little and is a technology that provides you with a method of getting relevant and up to date information sent to you for you to read in your own time. It saves you time and helps you to get the information you want quickly after it was published.

RSS stands for ‘Really Simple Syndication’. Many people describe it as a ‘news feed’ that you subscribe to.

I find the ’subscription’ description helpful. It’s like subscribing to a magazine that is delivered to you periodically but instead of it coming in your physical mail box each month when the magazine is published it is delivered to your ‘RSS Reader’ every time your favorite website updates.

How RSS actually technically works is probably a lesson for another day but the key today is for you to understand why it’s good and how to use it.

Let me say right up front that I’m not the most technically savvy guy going around - but even I can use RSS. At first I found it a little strange to make the change from bookmarking to RSS but I found that when I started that I just couldn’t stop.

How to use RSS

Get an RSS reader - The first thing you’ll want to do if you’re getting into reading sites via RSS is to hook yourself up with an RSS Feed Reader.

There are many feed readers going around with a variety of approaches and features - however a good place to start is with a couple of free and easy to use web based ones like Google Reader and Bloglines. Either one will do if you’re starting out (I use Google’s Reader) - as I say there are many others to choose from but to get started either of these are fairly easy to use and will help you work out the basics of RSS.

Both of these feed readers work a little like email. As you subscribe to feeds you’ll see that unread entries from the sites you’re tracking will be marked as bold. As you click on them you’ll see the latest update and can read it right there in the feed reader. You are given the option to click through to the actual site or move onto the next unread item - marking the last one as ‘read’.

The best way to learn how to use either Google Reader or Bloglines is to simply subscribe to some feeds and give it a go. Both have helpful help sections to get you up and running.

Note: other options to tracking websites that you might already be familiar with include using pages like MyYahoo, MyGoogle and MyMSN.

Find Some Feeds to Subscribe to - there are two places to look for a site’s feed:

  1. On the Site
  2. In Your Browser

On Site Subscription
Over the last few years you may have noticed a lot of little buttons and widgets appearing on your favorite sites and blogs. Little orange buttons, ‘counters’ with how many ‘readers a blog has, links called RSS, XML, ATOM and many more.

They come in all shapes and sizes. Here are a few you might have seen:

There are plenty more - but any time you see any of these buttons or anything like them it means that the site you are viewing almost certainly has a feed that you can subscribe to. In most cases it’s as simple as either copying and pasting the link associated with the button into your RSS Reader or clicking the button and following the instructions to subscribe using the feed reader of your choice.

Browser Subscription

Many internet browsers now have the ability to find and subscribe to RSS feeds built right into them.

When you surf to a site you can usually tell if it has an RSS feed by looking in the right hand side of address bar where you type in the site’s URL.

Don’t want to Use an RSS Reader? Email is an Option

If the above explanation all just seems a little too complicated for you then please don’t worry. Many sites also enable you to subscribe to RSS feeds via a more familiar medium - Email.

Here at BMXfactor we know that not everyone is into the RSS thing so if you
click here, you can get a daily email with a summary of our latest posts. You can unsubscribe at any time and your email will be kept private and not used for any other purposes than to send these daily updates.

How to: Fall Four Stories

Fall Four Stories and survive like Jake Brown
How to: Fall Four Stories (Like Pro Sk8er Jake Brown)

Just in case you somehow ever find yourself doing Kevin Robinson, Matt Hoffman, or Morgan Wade sized airs there is an interesting article I found on Wired on How to Survive a 4 Story fall.

1. Don't panic. As Brown says, "Gravity does what gravity does, you know?"

2. Pick a good landing spot. Trained BASE jumpers and skydivers can survive free falls of 100 feet, if they hit mud or a slope. If you're falling from less than 100 feet, you can aim for water (any higher and surface tension makes hitting water feel like slamming into concrete).

3. Spread the impact. Brown turned in midair and absorbed the impact with his feet, then rolled across his back. Such a maneuver is the best way to turn vertical momentum horizontal.

4. Be tough as nails, lucky, or Australian. From a height of 50 feet, you quickly accelerate to 30 miles per hour — so fast, as one expert puts it, you're lucky if your internal organs stay in place on impact.

And, of course, if you are doing airs that big you should enter next year's X-Games Big Air contest and win some cash... which you should then promptly split with me for helping you out so much.
You're welcome.
